Bude Haven Parish Church is in danger of closing…
…… JUST STAYING OPEN COSTS £12,000 ANNUALLY
……and then there’s the estimated £50,000 – £100,000 needed to stop water ingress and to build modern facilities
Friends of Bude Haven Parish Church (FoBPC) was formed in 2019 to ensure that the church building stays open for community use now and for future generations to enjoy. In recent years the congregation has declined in number and the church’s upkeep, maintenance and the need to meet modern health and safety standards have become an increasing burden. As with many old buildings, unexpected problems crop up with increasing frequency.
FoBPC is not concerned with faith but with fabric. We aim to safeguard a historic monument, one of the oldest and best buildings in Bude Haven. Our purpose is to help with the structural upkeep of the church and also to make it suitable for use by the community as a whole. Our major works to date include funding towards the new disabled access (lighting, a handrail and a special door mechanism) and the fitting of CCTV.
Our current Appeal!
Having successfully achieved our aim of providing a wheelchair-accessible toilet with baby-changing facilities at the back of the church, we have now moved on to our next project. Water has been seeping through the walls of the building for some time, causing unsightly mould and damage to the panelling and other fittings. An architect’s survey has been completed and it has identified that the guttering on the north side of the roof needs to be repaired, as well as repointing and consolidating some of the external masonry, which has delaminated on both the north and south sides. Some of the damage was caused by poor repairs carried out in the 1960s, so extra care has to be taken to get it right this time. The estimated cost of the work needed is £40,000.
FoBPC’s new goal is to support the PCC by raising £20,000 as half the estmated total required. Meanwhile the PCC is applying for grants to meet the other half of the cost.
